Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
