Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Administration officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction process.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.

“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.

Some Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Release

However, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.

But a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.

“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.

Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.

Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included no new data.
