Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
