EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
