Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking political figure commented the vandalism made him speechless and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
